Notification of Headstone/Memorial Works in Wetherby Cemetery, Hallfield Lane, Wetherby

Notice is hereby given by Wetherby Town Council to owners of graves in Wetherby Cemetery of proposals to deal with those headstones/memorials that were laid down under the Safety Inspection programme 2006-9.

Owners of 90 of these graves have not come forward to reinstate their headstones/memorials for which they have a legal responsibility. Although the council has offered financial support for this work, it is accepted that in many cases there will be no living owners.

The memorials are causing continued grounds/maintenance problems as well as adversely affecting the visual image of the cemetery.

In accordance with the Local Authorities Cemetery Order (LACAO) 1977, the council proposes to do one of the following two options to all the headstones/memorials listed below:
Option 1 – Remove base and re-erect the headstone by part burying it so inscription can be read
Option 2 – Refixing stone crosses to bases

Date of Commencement
The council is required to give three months notice before this work can commence. It is intended to start these works in January 2010.

Public Notice

This Notice will appear in the Wetherby News on 9 and 16 October 2009. Public information notices have been placed in Wetherby Cemetery. Letters have not been sent to grave owners as these graves are all over 30 years old.

Anyone wishing to:
1.   Object to these proposals.
2.   Request the re-erection of a headstone/memorial; or
3.   Request the removal of any headstone or memorial should contact Wetherby Town Council for more information.

Any objections to the above proposals should be sent within three months of the date of this Notice to Wetherby Town Council. The council will consider these and any other claims or requests from grave owners in accordance with the LACO 1977 referred to above.
